Reasons for European Colonization
They wanted to pass the middlemen so they can trade with East Asia. The Renaissance made Europeans want to explore new lands and meet new people. The explorers weren't just interested in finding gold, but they were looking for new pools of wealth so they could expand their nation. They needed gold and silver to fuel the rising thinking system. They also wanted spices, which could be sold for money. It was also a competition. Prince Henry of Portugal was the first to encourage new ship explorations, and he was also known as Prince Henry the Navigator. He started an institute for seafaring and exploring. Then, he combined Muslim ship technology with new innovations from the Europeans. By the time he had died, Portugal has sailed as far as West Africa’s Gold Coast. Henry died on November 13, 1460. Christopher Columbus's voyage was ready to be financed by the King and Queen of Spain, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, in 1492. He set sail with three vessels, and 90 sailors as his crew. The ship’s names were the Santa Maria, Niña and Pinta. On October 11, his crew spotted land. It was not the Indies, but actually the Bahamas. He named this island Hispañola.
Mercantilism is the economic system based on the belief that a country could increase its wealth by exporting more than they imported. Horse, Cattle, Sheep, and Pig were the livestock transported from Europe to the Americas. Squash, Avocado, Peppers, Sweet Potatoes, Turkey, Pumpkin, Cacao, Pineapple, Cassava, Potato, Peanut, Tomato, Vanilla, and Maize were carried by the Europeans to the Americas. Native Americans had a fairly large influence on the Europeans. They treated the Europeans to new customs and to cash crops such as corn, potatoes, been, squash, and peanuts. They also showed them the government they had that soon became the government structure that we have today. They also showed them how to hunt small animals. The idea of Confederacy was born from the Native Americans. The encounters between the people of the Eastern and Western Hemispheres sparked a global exchange of goods and ideas. Because this started with the voyages of Columbus, this became known as the Columbus Exchange.
Europeans wanted to pass the middlemen so they could trade with East Asia. The Renaissance gave thought to new people and new lands. The Reformation was a huge push in religion in Europe. There were a lot of religious refugees, and missionaries. Monarchs wanted more income for their kingdoms. There were a lot of technological advances. They mostly wanted fame and fortune.
Gold
They weren't interested in only finding gold, but they were looking for new pools of wealth so they could expand their nation. They needed gold and silver for the rising thinking system. They also wanted spices, which could be sold for money. It was also a competition.
Glory
People wanted more fame. Kings wanted glory for their kingdoms. They thought that their king was appointed by god. Competitions spread as the kings wanted to make their kingdoms the most glorious of them all.
God
The Europeans started spreading religion, thinking it was a good thing, after the Reformation. Countries raced each other as each one tried to make the native peoples of the lands that they found convert to a branch of Christianity, if the native peoples didn't already believe in god. Most of the people in Europe were Catholics.

France |
Great Britain |
France was the 3rd European Colony to try and explore North America. Giovanni de Verrazono sailed from France in 1524. He thought he could reach Asia from the West, just like Columbus. He reached the East of either Carolina, Georgia, or Florida. It is unknown. Then he sailed to Nova Scotia. France used his exploration to claim parts of the Southeast. However, Spain attacked and killed the people in France's forts, but both France and Spain were allies in the French and Indian War, in which France would give Spain the Louisiana Territory. France created new forts and settlements. France wanted more income. They explored the Southeast, Central, and the Northeast part of North America.
SpainThe Spanish came to North America to convert the Natives to Christianity, expand their empire, and find new riches. Spain first tried in the West Indies, Central America, and Northern South America. Then they heard of the mythical cities of gold that were located in the North. Spain colonized La Florida, which today comprises of Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi. The Spanish also founded St. Augustine, in La Florida. It was an important military base. After the French and Indian War, Spain gave La Florida to Great Britain.

England and France didn't obey to the Line of Demarcation and explored in the New World. John Cabot went to the Northeastern coast of North America in 1497. England claimed North America's Easter Seaboard. England rejected the Line of Demarcation and the Treaty of Tordesillas, so Spain created the Right of First Discovery. Great Britain wanted more land so that they could get mercantilism. Great Britain wanted to have areas to farm. Also, people wanted more religious freedom. As in the case of Georgia, debtors were given a "second chance". Also, they wanted money, or mercantilism. Merchants traded crops with one another, and there was a lot of population growth resulting in Britain looking to explore for new lands to colonize. England needed a military bases, so they built garrisons in the colonies.
