33b - evaluate the Trustee Period of Georgia’s colonial history emphasizing the role of Salzburgers, Highland Scots, malcontents, and Spanish threat from Florida
Trustee Period |
Salzburgers |
The Trustee Period was from 1732-1752. This was the time period that King George allowed Georgia to be governed.
1. Georgia couldn’t grow crops like their wealthy and prosperous neighbor South Carolina. The settlers struggled in Georgia and they lived off of small of amounts of rice, and they also grew mulberry trees for a silk industry. 2. Georgia’s settlers always feared that Spain would attack Georgia. 3. Then there was the problem of the Malcontents. 4. Settlers had to protect the colony. 5. They could not sell land. 6. The property could only be inherited by male heirs. 7. Each colonist had to obey to the regulations that the Trustees established. After Spain was defeated, Oglethorpe returned to England, where he married in 1744. Without the guidance of Oglethorpe and the Trustees, the colony of Georgia started to fail miserably. The Trustees finally listened to the Malcontents, and allowed them rum and slavery. Due to their failed experiment at making a "worker's paradise", the Trustees gave the colony back to King George II, one year before the expiration of the charter. The colony was returned in 1752, after 20 years. Highland ScotsThis was another ethnic group. They were recruited to help defend the settlers from hostile Native Americans, and Spain. They settled in Darien in January 1736. They were the Georgian defense’s backbone. They were known for their ferocious fighting ability, and their bravery and determination in battle. The Highland Scots were from Scotland. They ambushed the Spanish in the Battle of Bloody Marsh in 1742, and they defeated a much larger Spanish army. They also didn't believe in slavery.

Salzburgers were Lutherans from the German town of Salzburg. They were looking for religious freedom. They settled in Georgia while searching for religious freedom. John Martin Bolzius was their leader. They founded Ebenezer, which is 25 miles North of Savannah. Ebenezer means "Rock of Help." They moved to New Ebenezer in 1736. They produced silk and raised cattle (burger). They are deeply religious, and they are also a hard-working community. They didn't believe in slavery, They had great success in Georgia. Many of their descendants live in New Ebenezer today.
MalcontentsMalcontents were settlers who were unhappy with the politics of Georgia, and against slavery and land ownership. They were discontent with life in the colony of Georgia. They were a "thorn" in the side of the Trustees. They were jealous of their wealthy neighbors in South Carolina. They were finally acknowledged by the Trustees, which resulted in the Trustees returning the colony back to King George II.
Spanish Threat from FloridaThe Spanish threat from Florida was a constant threat to the settlers of Georgia. Spain captured a British merchant ship, and accused the ship's captain, Robert Jenkins, for stealing and hording goods from Florida. They then cut Robert Jenkins' ear off. After Oglethorpe's unsuccessful invasion of St. Augustine, Spin's important military base, Spain invaded St. Simons Island in Georgia. However, the Highland Scots and Oglethorpe's army ambushed and defeated the Spanish. This battle was called the Battle of Bloody Marsh. As a result of this victory, any major Spanish threats to the British colonies was extinguished, though there would still be minor clashes.
