Irony: Verbal, Situational, Dramatic
•Irony is a figure of speech. The meaning of the words is different from the actual meaning. There are 3 types of irony.
- Dramatic (This type is used mostly in novels or movies, in which the situation is understood by the audience, but the characters cannot understand/grasp the situation)
- Situational (the actions in a situation have an opposite effect than what was intended, which leads to the outcome being contrary to the expected outcome).
- Verbal (a person says or writes something, but means something else, or they use words to show a meaning which is opposite to the literal meaning). This type of irony is also known as sarcasm. So, sarcasm is a type of irony.
