Night at the Civil War Museum
Introduction (10 pts)
We have just been given a project to do about the Civil War. We have chosen to do a diorama about the Battle of Griswoldville, which happened at Griswoldville, Georgia. It was part of Sherman's March to the Sea. We hope to teach people about the North's attack on Atlanta and how they scorched the area. We also want to teach people how the army of the Confederacy was far less experienced than the North during the Battle of Griswoldville. The Union took supplies from the steel and cotton manufactures but mainly burnt and destroyed them. They also destroyed the railroads there. Out of rage, the Confederate army (old men and boys) attacked the seasoned veterans of the Union, and the result was all of the Confederate army being either killed or wounded.
This will show how this battle affected the whole Civil War, and many states, mostly Georgia. This affected the Civil War by having even more supplies needed for the Confederate armies cut off or destroyed. The reason why supplies were so needed now and not then was because of the Battle of Gettysburg. This made Robert E. Lee’s army even weaker after the severe losses of previous battles in the Civil War. Not only that, this also helped Sherman’s March to the Sea even more successful than it was at the time making the Union having eventually won the war. Our AKS standards talk about the battles of the Civil War and how they were important (as listed below).
Essential/Driving Research Question (5 pts)
Standards (30 pts)
8th Grade Georgia Studies
1. Standards / AKS (write out entire standard that fits under category)
37c - state the importance of key events of the Civil War to include Antietam, Emancipation Proclamation, Gettysburg, Chickamauga, Union blockade of Georgia’s coast, Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign, Sherman’s March to the Sea, and Andersonville.
Vocab:
Confederacy: When the south seceded from the Union, the seceded states then made the Confederate states of America also known as the Confederacy (Confederate States of America: C.S.A). They fought against the Union during the Civil War in order to attempt to keep slaves and slave trade.
Union: These were the northern states, or the states that did not secede, they fought in the Civil War to bring back the Confederacy (more info above) at all cost and to stop slavery.
Abraham Lincoln: He was elected by the Republican Party and was considered a “black Republican”. He became the 16th president without getting a single electoral college vote from the Southern states.
Republican Party: The Republican Party supported Abraham Lincoln. They were mostly Northerners, and their platform was opposing slavery.
Seasoned Veteran: Soldiers that have much experience and are usually the highest caliber troops in battle.
Charles Walcutt: The general that was in charge for the union’s side at the Battle of Griswoldville.
Joseph Wheeler: The general that was in charge for the confederacy’s side at the Battle of Griswoldville.
Charles Woods: He was the person who resupplied Union soldiers during the siege at Fort Sumter.
General Phillips: His 3 Georgia Militia brigades attacked General Walcutt’s barricade.
Sherman’s March to the Sea: T. Sherman made a plan that would make a path to the sea through GA and that he and his army would burn down everything in a 6 mile radius in their paths.
William Tecumseh Sherman: One of the union’s main generals during the war and made the plan that eventually led the union to victory in the Civil War, March to the Sea
Griswoldville: Griswoldville during the Civil War provided the Confederacy with supplies such as cotton, which was used to make money, and steel, which was used to make weaponry.
The Army of Confederacy at the Battle of Griswoldville: The army composition of the Confederacy during this battle were mainly old men and boys who were no younger than 15.
Intended Outcome (10 pts)
The intended outcome of this project will be to re-create a miniature version of the Battle of Griswoldville. It will have forests on both sides, a railroad on one side with a river crossing. There will also be mini civil war soldiers and cannons with the flags of both sides on toothpicks (or something) on the ground to represent the flags and units of both sides on the battlefield.

Result
Our result will be a diorama that features the Battle of Griswoldville. This will have Union troops on one side with Confederate troops charging downhill (on the other side) attacking the Union troops. This will be a very accurate diorama of the Battle of Griswoldville. Another result of our project is that the project took a lot of work. However, we were able to teach people about this important battle that has been overlooked. Also, we were able to depict how harsh Sherman's March to the Sea was and how it impacted the Southern army.
Reflection
Sherman had many ranks of cavalry by his side as he intercepted Georgia militia forcing the Georgians into Griswoldville. Most of the Union troops were seasoned veterans who slaughtered the Confederates when they charged the Union troops at Griswoldville. The Confederacy army consisted of teenagers and old men. Most of the attacking Confederate army was killed. After capturing the city, General Walcutt's troops burned the entire city to the ground. The only things they spared was anything of military value. The project itself was very time consuming. It took a lot of work.
